What to Pack in Your Car Emergency Kit

October 31st, 2019 by

It seems like car trouble always happens when you least expect it. Very few of us ever leave the house assuming we’ll wind up stuck, stranded, or waiting for a tow, and yet automotive failure can still occur, catching us off guard.

Even if you’re taken by surprise by your car breakdown, you don’t have to be completely unprepared. Having a car emergency kit can ensure that you’re ready even for these unfortunate scenarios.

The question is, what should your car emergency kit include? Here are a few ideas.

Packing Your Car Emergency Kit

Jumper cables

If it’s a dead battery that has you stranded, you may be able to get back in motion with a simple jump from another vehicle. To accomplish this, you’ll need a set of jumper cables, which we recommend stowing in your trunk at all times.

Flares or reflectors

If your car gets stuck somewhere, you’ll want to do everything you can to alert other motorists, encouraging them to give you a wide berth. Flares or reflective triangles will get the job done.

Fluids

Sometimes, you may simply need to top off your fluids. We recommend keeping a gallon of coolant and a quart of motor oil in your trunk. If you’re not sure what kind of oil your engine takes, you can consult the owner’s manual.

First-Aid Kit

Hopefully, your automotive problems don’t lead to accident or injury, but if they do, you’ll want to be prepared with some basic wound care items. You may also want to keep some pain relievers and anti-nausea medications handy, as well, in case you ever become ill while you’re out on the open road.

A flashlight and batteries

If you get stranded at night and need to make automotive repairs, a good flashlight is invaluable.

Protein bars and bottled water

Prepare for all contingencies, including the chance that you’re stuck somewhere for a while. Some filling snacks and hydration may be lifesavers one day.

A tire pressure gauge

If your tires start giving you problems, a pressure gauge can help you diagnose the issue and alert you to exactly which tires need re-inflation.
