Summer Driving Tips for Road Trips and Daily Driving

Summer time means summer road trips. Visits to beaches, campgrounds, and theme parks are a staple of American summers. And with low gas prices coupling with the re-opening of the economy, 1 in 3 Americans are planning to take a road trip this summer.

But summer time also means summer heat and the various consequences that brings for your car. Below are some summer driving tips to read about before embarking on your journey.

How to Stay Safe on the Road This Summer

Take Care of Your Radiator

Your air conditioning system will be working overtime during the hottest time of the year. Make sure your radiator is freshly topped off with coolant and check that the cap is tightly sealed to keep the coolant chamber properly pressurized.

Keep Out of the Sun

We take steps to protect ourselves from summer rays, but what about our vehicles? Sunshine and heat can cause paint jobs to fade, leather upholstery to weather and dashboard panels to crack.

Park in the shade (or in a garage) or use window shades to help your car beat the heat.

Check Your Tires

A lot of tires tend to blow out during summer months because heat causes the air inside your tires to expand. And when tires are worn, the chances of a blowout increase even more. Have your tire pressure checked and consider a tire rotation to extend the life of your tires and reduce the chances of a flat.

Inspect Your Safety Systems

With more traffic on the road in the summer, it’s the most dangerous time of year to drive. If your car has any advanced safety systems, make sure they are in good working order and that you understand how to properly use them.

Replace Your Wiper Blades

Coming off winter, there’s a good chance your windshield wiper blades might be worn and ill-prepared for the summer rainstorms headed your way. Be sure your wiper blades are in good working condition and have them replaced if necessary.
