How to Choose Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned Cars
There’s more than one way to purchase a previously owned vehicle. The next time you head to the dealership, you may face a choice between used cars and Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles. These may sound synonymous, but there are some important distinctions.
At Schumacher Automotive Group, we have both used cars for sale as well as CPO vehicles across our 13 locations, and we’re always eager to help clients make an informed decision. Let’s take a quick look at what makes used vehicles and CPO cars distinct from one another.
What’s the Difference Between Used and CPO Vehicles?
When we use the term used cars, we’re talking about just that — cars that have been owned and driven by other owners. Compared to new vehicles, these can be more affordable. There are some caveats, though, including higher mileage and fewer warranties or factory protections.
CPO vehicles, meanwhile, provide peace of mind to consumers who want a bargain but don’t want the risk associated with a used car. These vehicles are inspected by the dealership or manufacturer and verified to be in good working condition. Often, CPO vehicles will come with limited factory warranties, assurances that they run well and won’t cause problems.
Often, dealerships will throw in other features to make CPOs even more enticing, including roadside assistance, loaner vehicles (if yours has problems), and more.
Based on all of this, it may sound like CPO vehicles are the better option. For many drivers, they are, but there are still a few things to consider. First, note that a CPO vehicle will generally cost more than a used car, though less than a brand-new model. Second, understand that all used cars depreciate at a lower rate than their new counterparts. That ultimately means that there may not be a wrong way to go.
